pop it

A pop it is a silicone fidget covered in domes you press from one side to the other, then turn over and start again. This one is a virtual pop it that runs in the browser, so there is nothing to download and no app store to visit. The tray reflows to whatever screen you are on, so a phone gets a full sheet rather than a shrunken one.

There are six trays to pop. Classic is the seven by seven square you already picture. Circle, heart, star, flower and hexagon each lay their domes out differently, so the shape you are sweeping across changes with them. Picking a new tray starts a fresh one.

Press one dome at a time, or hold and drag to rake across a whole row at once. The pitch climbs as the tray fills up, and a quick sweep layers a light crackle over the pops, so raking sounds different from a careful press. If you would rather not use a pointer, the arrow keys move between domes and space pops the one you are on.

Clearing every dome sets off a short celebration, pays 25 Drops on top of the one each dome earns, and flips the tray. Drops are the playground’s own currency and spend in the studio on a Bead avatar, themes and sound kits. Once the page has loaded the whole thing works offline, so it keeps going on a train or a plane.

It is the simplest kind of reset. A minute of steady popping gives restless hands something to do and your mind somewhere quiet to land, and nothing is keeping score. There is no timer, no fail state and no end, so you can stop the moment you feel like stopping. If you have motion turned down in your system settings, the celebration stays calm and the popping does not.
